Departing from your hotel in La Fortuna or near the Arenal Volcano around 7:20 AM, this tour takes you to one of Costa Rica's most ecologically rich areas. Known for its incredible biodiversity, Caño Negro is a sanctuary for a wide variety of animals, including monkeys, sloths, caimans, iguanas, and countless species of birds.

As we cruise along the Río Frío, you'll have the chance to spot these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. Our expert guide will provide insights into the region's unique ecosystems, helping you connect with the beauty and importance of this wildlife refuge.

The tour concludes around 3:00 PM, when you’ll be dropped back at your hotel. You'll leave with incredible memories and, hopefully, some stunning wildlife photos.

We start the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge Tour driving on a comfortable tour van for approximately one hour and half close to the town of Los Chiles, located at 4 kms from the border of Nicaragua. Before to get to Los chiles we take the road to Caño Negro Town and we will continue our journey by traveling the Río Frío via boat upstream to the Caño Negro Refuge.

Here you will experience one of nature’s most beautiful wildlife displays. While boating along the riverbanks, you most likely will encounter a great variety of birds, flora, mammals, and reptiles. Among the many birds are Wood Stork, White Ibis, Anhinga, Glossy Ibis, and Black-bellied Whistling Duck.

Some of the mammals and reptiles that live in the refuge include three species of monkeys, sloths, tapirs, ocelots, long-nosed bats, caimans, and the luminescent green Emerald Basilisks.
